Sadly, along with the majority of America, I didn’t win the Powerball. I really really wanted to, and I definitely did what I could by buying about 20 tickets! And although I prayed and bargained with God, saying I’d give such-and-such amount to charity, and that I swore I wouldn’t let the money change me, I still didn’t win.
You see, in my small little world, I thought winning the Powerball would be good for me! I would have financial security for the first and only time in my life, and I imagined being able to help my family, friends, and charities around me (or so I thought)! For me, winning the Powerball was going to fix all my problems, so why wouldn’t God want me to win, right??
Luckily for me, God is a good Father. He knows what is best for me, and most of the time that is WAY out of my own understanding. Although winning the Powerball was an “apparent good,” maybe I would have stopped relying on God to provide for me. Maybe I would have become prideful, greedy, gluttonous, or slothful because of my winnings. Maybe I would have had all my earthly means taken care of, and let my soul atrophy now that I didn’t need God to provide for me.
Who knows. The point is though, God is all-powerful. If He wanted me to win the Powerball, I would have. The other half of the fact though, is that God is all-good. Unanswered prayers aren’t really “unanswered” just because we don’t get the result we want. God, our good and perfect loving Father, is constantly allowing that which in the end, is for our benefit. Yes, even pain. Even suffering. Even having to live paycheck to paycheck. God didn’t promise life would always be easy or painless, but He did promise that He would be with us in everything. He would never abandon us. “What I am doing, you don’t understand now. But later, you will understand.” — John 13:7.
God, I trust Your judgement way more than I trust my own. Lead on Father, lead on.

- Ask God for what you want, and what you need, and wait with expectant faith that you will be given an answer, even if its not the one you’re hoping for.
- Make a list of all the ways God has blessed you today, this week, this month, and this year, and thank Him for being such a good and loving Father.
- Ask a friend what they’ve been praying for lately. Listen to see if God puts it on your heart to help them.
