Does Jesus want to just be friends? I would argue no. This Sunday’s gospel seems even a little harsh at first glance.
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” You can read the whole Gospel here.
Jesus doesn’t just tell the disciples to be the best darn people they can be- that’s not the heart of what it means to be Christian. It’s about losing our life in surrender to find it in Jesus. It’s about picking up our cross and following Jesus.
Jesus does call us friend, but we are invited to so much more.
Don’t miss this week’s video where I explain what Jesus is talking about.
