Let’s not look at the Sacrament of Reconciliation as “confession.” It’s not merely our act, but our opportunity to receive healing and mercy.
It’s a gift – prepare to receive it and take full advantage of it. Look at your attitude towards the Sacrament. Run to Jesus frequently.
How do you prepare? Examine daily, and examine more consciously as you prepare for the Sacrament.
Our featured saint of this episode is St. John Vianney, the “Cure d’Ars.”
He spent days hearing confession. It was said he was sometimes in the confessional for 16-18 hours a day.
Quotes from St. John Vianney:
- “The Lord is more anxious to forgive our sins than a woman is to carry her baby out of a burning building.” – St. John Vianney
- “My children, it is like a person who has a slight illness; he need not go and see a doctor, he may cure himself without. If he has a headache, he need only go to bed; if he is hungry, he has only to eat. But if it is a serious illness, if it is a dangerous wound, he must have the doctor; after the doctor come the remedies. In the same way, when we have fallen into any grievous sin, we must have recourse to the doctor, that is the priest; and to the remedy, that is confession.”
- “You either belong wholly to the world or wholly to God.”
- “See, my children, a person who is in a state of sin is always sad. Whatever he does, he is weary and disgusted with everything; while he who is at peace with God is always happy, always joyous. . . Oh, beautiful life! Oh, beautiful death!” –
He reminds to run away to prayer, the importance of confession, and that we either belong to the world or to God.
