In my walk with the Lord I have learned and been reminded frequently that He made me with the ability to experience every emotion. This includes joy, hope, peace, laughter, nostalgia, calm and other things. It seems almost too easy to forget that we are actually made to experience the negative as well as the positive. Therefore inherently if God made us this way, then He did it for a reason. There comes a time for each emotion and each phase of our life where we experience highs and lows, and the only time when that is actually disordered is when there is an unbalance. If we look at emotions that we experience as they come, we are physically able to heal and to experience the things that God has for us today – our daily bread. However when we hold on to any emotion, good or bad, we become unbalanced.
This is so real that we can actually physically feel our emotions. Holding on to sadness in an attempt to avoid dealing with something that happened in our life can lead to intense depression or avoidance that keeps us from mourning and healing. Holding on to a fleeting moment of joy can leave us seeking things that have past and are no longer good for us and prevent us from finding God in our daily lives. Holding on to anger and not finding a way to vent or cope with it can lead to tension and stress that is unnecessary and unhealthy.
It is important for us as God’s children to recognize that there is no shame in our experiencing emotion; we were made to feel. When we are unable to process our emotion, we need to go directly to Him in prayer and ask Him to take these feelings in His hands as we are able to experience them washing over us like waves on the beach. This acknowledgement that God wants to share in our emotions and to be with us on a day-to-day basis allows for us to deepen our relationship with Him in a way that holding on to hurts and emotions would otherwise separate us.
4 Ways to Take This Offline:
- Find a moment or place to sit still and examine yourself and your emotions. Acknowledge what you are feeling and take these things with Jesus to God the Father.
- If you are harboring feelings towards someone, good or bad, ask for God to walk with you to express these feelings to them kindly with the intention of improving your relationship and clearing up any and all misunderstanding.
- If you are unable to share your feelings, write them down in a prayer journal or notebook and pray over them with a friend.
- Meet with a prayerful friend and discuss the things you are struggling with, pray together over your needs and ask God to bring you back into a full and unhindered relationship with Him.
