Novena to the Holy Spirit

May 29, 2019 by Lauren Gates Leave a Comment

Did you know that the very first novena in our Catholic tradition dates back to the very first Pentecost?

From EWTN’s website: “The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent His apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost! It is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church. Addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian.”

As the Easter season draws to a close and Ordinary Time begins, join us in praying this powerful novena for the next nine days as we wait for the Holy Spirit to renew our hearts!

You can find the prayers for the novena here.

Praying with the Bible

May 23, 2019 by Lauren Gates Leave a Comment

The Bible has been described as many things over the centuries: our Church history, a road map to heaven, a love letter from God, etc. One of the most important titles we can give the Bible is “a prayer.”

The Bible contains every sort of prayer imaginable. Particularly in the Psalms, there are passages of praise, passages of lament, and everything else in between.

Through the Bible, God reveals to us how we should pray. He gives us words where we may have none of our own, and through the Biblical figures, He shows us how He answers prayer, to encourage us.

By taking time every day to meditate on the Scriptures, we learn to hear God’s voice. It is of the utmost importance as Christians that we learn to recognize God’s voice, so that we can discern when He is speaking to us in our daily lives.

If praying with the Bible is something you feel inspired to try, you can start by opening up to the Psalms, or the Gospels. Ask God to open your heart and mind to what He wants you to hear, and after reading a passage, pause in silence to listen for the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Take advantage of this beautiful tool that God Himself scripted through the Biblical authors. He knew then what you and I would need to hear today.

Tips to Prepare for Mass

August 30, 2018 by Lauren Gates 4 Comments

Question for you today: When does Mass begin?

In the Eastern Catholic Church, there is a tradition that Mass begins when we start to prepare. That is, when we start to get ready and travel to Mass. That is the moment when we should start to turn our minds and hearts towards God.

Here are a few suggestions to help you prepare for Mass:

  1. On the way to Mass, think about what you are thankful for
  2. Think about something or someone you want to pray for at Mass
  3. Read the readings beforehand, or listen to them on the USCCB Podcast. (Click here)

What other ways can we prepare our minds and hearts for Mass? If you have any tips, share them in the comments below!

Greatest Commandment

March 20, 2018 by Lauren Gates 3 Comments

SCRIPTURE – Today’s video is based on Mark 12:28-34. Here is an excerpt. “The first is this: ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

REFLECT – All of us have carried the wounds of original sin, and all of us are in need of healing of some kind. If we want to be the kind of person who loves our neighbors as ourselves and loves God with our whole hearts, we first need to go to God and ask Him to heal us. We can’t give what we don’t have, and to spread God’s love, we need it ourselves. What area of your life needs God’s love and healing the most? Don’t keep it from Him, call out to Him urgently and He will run to you.

SHARE – Spend some time asking God to fill you with His love and healing grace, and to then show you who to take that love to next.

PRAY – God our Father, Divine Physician, come into my heart and reveal to me what still needs Your healing. I offer you my entire heart. Please heal me and fill me with Your love, so that I can share it with the people around me. Amen.

Entry Into Jerusalem

March 17, 2018 by Lauren Gates 1 Comment

SCRIPTURE – Today’s video is based on Mark 11: 1-11. Here is an excerpt. “Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!’ “

REFLECT – Jesus entered into Jerusalem amid shouts of joy from the crowd. Do our hearts cry out with joy when we see Jesus approaching us at Mass, in the Eucharist, the Sacraments, or in each other? Do we praise heaven and thank God for giving us so great a Savior? Would we be one of the crowd welcoming Jesus into our city, or would we duck our heads and pass Him by silently?

SHARE – Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Ask the Lord to fill your heart with His joy, the joy of the people in Jerusalem. Find a way to share and spread that joy to someone today.

PRAY – Lord Jesus, please enter my heart. You are the King of my life, and I joyfully welcome You! Fill me with Your joy today. Amen.
