For me, gift giving is the most stressful part of the Christmas season. I have a couple relatives who are completely impossible to buy gifts for, because they already have everything under the sun! While I know they’ll thank me for whatever I get, I still second guess my choices and fear that anything I could get them would be inadequate or unappreciated.
Almost subconsciously, I apply that same fear to God. What could I possibly give to God, the Creator of all things?? I often feel like the disciples who, when presenting the 5 loaves and 2 fish to Jesus to feed the crowds, despair and say What good are these for so many?
Its so easy to forget that God doesn’t need gifts, He wants our hearts! God can feed 5,000 people with less than 5 loaves and 2 fish if He so chooses, and He wants me with all my mess, all my brokenness, all my anxieties and fears, all the parts that I don’t see as being good for anyone, let alone the God of the Universe!
God’s only Son was born in a dirty, smelly, dark, damp stable, filled with animals and filth, and poverty, to show us there is no wound too deep, no darkness of our being too deep for Him to enter into. He chose all of it. He wants all of us. All we need to do is, as the Wise Men did, bend our knees in adoration and offer Him the only gift that matters, ourselves.
4 Ways to Take This Offline:
- Sometimes the best way to figure out what we are withholding from God, is to think about what it is in ourselves that we hide from other people. Think about the mess you are refusing to give to God, and ask Him to help you let it go.
- Give food, clothes, toiletries, or other needed goods to your local homeless shelter or food pantry.
- Give the gift of time to someone today, especially someone who may be lonely or who you do not normally reach out to. Visit a local nursing home and spend time listening to others today.
- Forgive yourself today for who you are, the brokenness you carry, and the mess you feel ashamed of. Ask God to help you love yourself in those places.
