This is My Story

March 24, 2017 by Michael Gormley 2 Comments

Thought for today:

The goal of prayer is to let it occupy your whole life. A rosary, the liturgy, Scripture, spontaneous praise- all of this is meant to form you inside and out. We often think of God answering prayer in a very me-centric and narrow minded way, but God’s answer can come when we least expect it. When I prayed as a child, those Scripture meditations with the rosary formed the backbone of my conversion away from habitual sin. God is not bound by our “creatureliness,” so let Him be God and work on His time. He may not come when you want, but He is always on time.

Action for today:

Pray with another person today.

Prayer for today:

Father All-powerful, You hold my life in Your sovereign hands. Remind me that, by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, You desire my wholeness in You. For in You do I live and move and have my being. Amen.

Quote for today:

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” –CS Lewis (CLICK TO TWEET)

Be a Hero today – #ShareJesus:

Take a walk around your neighborhood today while praying for every house you walk by that the Lord would bless them.

Get to Know God

February 19, 2016 by Michael Gormley 6 Comments

Michael Gormley #ShareJesus Get to Know GodSeeing Jesus in the Poor is difficult because you want Jesus to come to you like you already are. We want a safe Jesus, but He’s not safe, especially not to our pride, self-conceit and other sins. Jesus is always upsetting the tables of our heart when we convert His dwelling into a den of robbers instead of a temple of His glory. We don’t like that. We also don’t like our comfortable “lifestyles” threatened by self-sacrifice. I hate that! I love my Netflix and HuluPlus and YMCA membership and all the other options that being rich gave me.

Rich? If you own a computer, a car, and rent/own a shelter with indoor plumbing, you’re rich when compared to the rest of the world. But we don’t feel rich, do we? That’s because we don’t compare ourselves to the world, or to the poorest of the poor, because we aren’t near them. We compare ourselves to the people we surround ourselves with, and we can tend to feel just in the middle of that particular bracket.

Jesus is inviting us into a way of seeing and comparing this tremendous wealth with His divine poverty. “For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2Cor8:9).

4 Ways to Take This Offline:

  1. The next panhandler you see, do not give him or her money. Have a conversation. Pray with him/her. And go and get a pizza together.
  2. Read Luke 6:20-26 for a fuller understanding of Christ’s views of wealth and poverty.
  3. Pray the Fragrance Prayer of Mother Teresa. (http://humblehandmaid.com/mother-teresas-fragrance-prayer/)
  4. Visit a nursing home, a prison, or a college dorm filled with Freshmen. Those three groups were considered the loneliest people in America.

Spiritual Life HACK: Waiting

December 15, 2015 by Michael Gormley Leave a Comment

Waiting is difficult because you aren’t really doing anything. The good or bad thing is still off in the distance, so what are we supposed to do in the meantime? Because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Christians have hope. Hope is a theological virtue, which is a fancy way of saying that hope is given to us by God and points us straight back to God. Hope means that we can trust in God’s promises not because we are confident in ourselves, but rather, we are confident that God is trustworthy and can make it happen.

#ShareJesus Michael Gomer Gormley Advent-2

That’s a big deal. See, if it’s all on me, waiting is just miserable. But if it’s all on God, even if the news is bad, you can be confident He is with you. You have hope that God is up to something even if it seems senseless to me. It is often in those “in the meantime” experiences that we draw closer to Christ.

4 ideas to take this offline:

  1. Spend 20 minutes in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament this week and ask Christ to reveal to you areas in your life where you still need to put your confidence in Him.
  2. Read Romans 8:18-28 and ask God to put your waiting, your patience, your endurance or hope, in the context of Christ redemption of all Creation.
  3. Pray the prayer “An Act of Hope” every morning.
  4. Support a fellow Christian who is suffering both relationally and financially. Sacrifice things in your own life to make their suffering easier, and thus help them wait upon the Lord in these difficult times through the help of real Christian brotherhood/fellowship.

ANSWER THIS IN THE COMMENTS: When has waiting taught you something about the presence and power of God?
