Don’t forget today isn’t just the first day of the year. It’s a Holy Day of obligation for us as Catholics because we celebrate Mary. It is the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.
Mary is the true Mother of God and the perfect model of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. When the angel Gabriel approached her and asked her if she would accept God’s plan for her life and carry God in her womb she responded: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38) In those words Mary surrenders her will to the Lord’s will. That is what it means to have faith – to surrender ourselves completely to God, including our will and our intellect.
God will never disappoint us and we will never regret living as His disciple. For Mary, that meant that Jesus Christ assumed a human nature and became man in her womb in order to accomplish our salvation. In saying “yes” Mary helped bring about God’s plan for salvation for the whole world.
Have you ever seen Mary intercede in your own life? If not, can you start a relationship with her today?

- Mary brought Jesus to the world and became the Mother of God. Can you do the same by offering to pray with someone on the spot, out loud, who is hurting and in need of God’s love?
