Thought for today:
When I heard that a new film version of “Beauty and the Beast” was being released, my mind immediately went to a quote from one of my favorite authors: G.K. Chesterton. He said, “There is the great lesson of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ that a thing must be loved before it is lovable.” Isn’t wonderful to think that the source of our belovedness doesn’t come from our own initiative, from anything we can accomplish, and that it’s not something we can win or lose? We are loved into existence by the One who is Love in Himself, and His gaze of love never departs from us for a single moment.
Action for today:
Often, when I find myself distracted from this truth and therefore “looking for love in all the wrong places…” I notice that my heart is somehow not “all in.” Maybe I’m not recollected in prayer, or I feel the need to hide parts of my heart from the light because I think they are too ugly or shameful even to think about, much less expose. A beautiful remedy for this “heart disease” is the sacrament of reconciliation. The Lord promises His light and peace to all who come to Him in this sacrament with a humble and contrite heart, because He wants the joy of becoming, once again, our Savior. Do you want to give Jesus that joy this week?
Prayer for today:
God, my Father, thank you for your love. Thank you for the gift of Jesus, who took my sin upon Himself to heal my soul and restore me in your love. Please send your Holy Spirit upon me today, to continue this great work of restoration in my life, and in the lives of all your children. Amen.
